A Schengen visa (or uniform visa) enbales its holder to travel in all of the following countries:

Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland  and Sweden.

Please be advised that if you intend to travel in more than one country in the Schengen area, you must apply for a visa at the Consulate of the Schengen country where you intend to stay longest. If you intend to stay in each Schengen country for the same length of time, you must apply for the visa at the Consulate of the Schengen country to which you will travel first when entering the Schengen area.


Upon completion of the application form, kindly send an email to  in order to set up a date and time for collection of biometric data (photo and fingerprints) and submission of the supporting documentation listed below at the Consulate General of Portugal (438 University Avenue, suite 1400, Toronto, ON, M5G 2K8, 416 217 0966).The following are the required documents for short stay visas:

  • $92.70 (cash or debit card) – subject to subtle change due to European Central Bank exchange rates
  • Passport (valid at least 3 months beyond stay) + 1 copy
  • 1 Passport size photograph (colour)
  • Canadian resident card (PR Card) or valid Canadian Visa (valid at least 2 months beyond stay) + 1 copy
  • Proof of sufficient funds (Ontario bank  or credit card statement – last 3 months)
  • Employment letter
  • Itinerary (actual ticket will be required at time of issuance of visa)
  • Proof of Emergency Medical Insurance (minimum €30,000 coverage) for the duration of the stay (may be presented at time of issuance of visa)
  • For business or if attending a conference, please add letter from employer or from entity in receiving state outlining purpose of the visit
  • Proof of lodging in Portugal (and other Schengen states, when applicable)

Kindly supply copies of all Schengen visas issued within the last three years (when applicable)

Processing times vary. In the majority of cases, visas will be issued approximately one week before departure date.

In Portugal, Canadian citizens can obtain extensions of the 90 days, by visiting the nearest  SEF (Portuguese Border Services) office.

You will need to submit two colored photos, proof of emergency medical insurance, proof of lodging and financial means. The cost is €64 (additional administrative charges may apply).

Citizens of the EU/EEA/Switzerland who intend to stay in Portugal for a period exceeding three months, need to apply for a REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE FOR EU/EEA/SWITZERLAND CITIZEN at the local municipal services (City Hall).

New legal provisions open up the possibility of applying for a residence permit for pursuing investment activities to those who have entered the country regularly, by transferring capital, creating jobs or acquiring real estate. It can be regarded as a driver to stimulate Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows.

The holders of Golden Residence Permit for Investment Activity have the right to family regrouping, and may gain access to a permanent residence permit, as well as to Portuguese citizenship in accordance to the current legal provisions.

For the purposes of obtaining this particular visa, the minimum quantitative requirements imply, at least, one of the following investments in national territories:

Capital transfer with a value equal to or above 1 000 000 (1 Million) Euros; 

Creation of, at least, 10 job positions;

Purchase of real estate property with a value equal to or above 500 000 (Five hundred thousand) Euros.

Residency visas

Enables the applicant to enter Portugal in order to request a residency permit; this visa is valid for a period of four months with two entries.

Student visas (temporary stay, if under 365 days /residency, if over 365 days)

Allows the applicant to enter Portugal for the purpose of study, scientific investigation, apprenticeships in educational establishments, firms, or public departments.

Work visas

Allows the bearer to enter Portugal to carry on professional activities for a maximum period of three years.

Temporary stay visas

Allows the holder to enter Portugal for medical treatment in Health Services. This visa can also be issued in exceptional cases, as well as to family members of those already holding study, work and temporary stay visas.

Documentary evidence of sufficient finances available to the applicant in Portugal (e.g. a Portugal bank statement showing a reasonable balance) -  applicable to D7 visas

Documentary evidence of having a reasonable net regular passive income (ie pension; investment; property rental; remote work) -  applicable to D7 visas

Documentary evidence for capability of carrying out remote work while in Portugal -  applicable to D2 visas
