Driving in Ontario
While you are in Ontario as a tourist, and up to a maximum period of 90 days, you may drive with your Portuguese driver's licence. After that period, an international driver's licence is required.

You may drive in Portugal with your foreign driving permit for a period of 185 days after entering Portugal and before establishing residence (driving as a tourist).

Driving licence exchange
- Portugal to Ontario
If you want to exchange your Portuguese driver's licence for an Ontario driver's licence, you must contact the competent authority: Exchange an out-of-province driver’s licence | ontario.ca.
For this purpose, it is suggested that you request to the Institute of Mobility and Land Transport in Portugal - IMTT, the issuance of a certificate proving that you have a Portuguese driver's licence, with all the characterizing elements and indicating that you obtained it by taking an exam.
This declaration and the driving license will have to be translated (Directory | ATIO). You will be subject to the provision of examinations.
- Ontario to Portugal

Documents to be submitted:
- Ontario Driver's License;
- " “Certified Driver Confirmation Letter” ", issued by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, translated(Directory | ATIO) with Apostille.
Issuance and renewal of driver's licenses
The issuing and renewal of driving licenses is the exclusive competence of the Institute of Mobility and Transport (IMT) in Portugal. Therefore, you cannot request the renewal or duplicate of your driving license in this Consulate General.
